New rules create ‘Chicken Disneyland’

LAKESIDE — Frank Hilliker stood inside a henhouse at his Lakeside ranch this week surrounded by 8,000 chickens milling about as they pleased. “I call this Chicken Disneyland,” Hilliker said, surveying the open space inside the 30-by-190 foot building where the birds — previously kept in small cages — now roam freely.

Eggs in high demand at Hilliker’s Ranch amid COVID-19

Need eggs? More and more people are heading to Hilliker’s Ranch Fresh Eggs in Lakeside, where they can drive through to get eggs instead of trying grocery stores amid the novel coronavirus.

Eggs available at Lakeside ranch ahead of Easter weekend

LAKESIDE, Calif. — As some grocery stores continue to run out of eggs, people across the county are flocking to Hilliker’s Ranch in Lakeside. Many were looking for eggs to dye over the Easter weekend.

“We’ve got to decorate,” one customer said. “We’ve got to keep things normal for the kids.”

Eggciting business at Farmer’s Market

Park your car at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market in the lot, cross the driveway, turn the corner and you’re bound to find a stand selling fresh eggs next to the produce booths.

This is the booth of Hilliker’s Ranch Fresh Eggs, Inc., a family-owned business from Lakeside that brings its oval products to Scripps Ranch each Saturday. This egg ranch has been in San Diego County since 1942 and is owned by the same family that started it. Today, Frank Hilliker along with his sister, Lara Woliung, and Frank’s wife, Cindy Hilliker, run the ranch.
